What It Is

Claude Design is a skill that turns Claude into an expert designer for HTML-based artifacts. You tell it what you want — a landing page, a slide deck, an animated prototype, a poster — and it produces production-quality HTML output with proper design thinking baked in.

The skill is adapted from Claude.ai’s internal Design system prompt, restructured into a portable Claude Skill that works in Claude Code, the Claude Agent SDK, or any environment where skills load. It lives on skills.sh at jiji262/claude-design-skill and has over 1,100 installs as of mid-2026.

What’s Actually Different

Most design prompts in Claude produce something decent on the first try, then fall apart when you ask for iteration. Claude Design avoids this by enforcing a structured process before it writes a single line of HTML.

Fact verification runs first. Before making assumptions about a product or brand, the skill runs a web search. It checks your brief against real information — product names, logos, brand colors, competitor landscapes. A 10-second search prevents hours of redesigning around wrong premises. I’ve seen this catch mistakes like using an outdated logo or mistaking a product’s target audience more times than I’d expect.

Design direction advisor mode. When the brief is vague (“design something nice”), the skill stops and proposes 3 differentiated directions from a library of 10 design philosophies spanning 5 schools — minimal, maximal, narrative, functional, experimental. It waits for you to pick before committing to a direction. This alone separates it from raw Claude, which will guess your taste and produce something that looks good but misses the brief entirely.

Anti-slop discipline. The skill has explicit rules against common AI-generated design tells: aggressive gradients, emoji bullets, rounded-cards-with-left-border, CSS silhouettes as product shots, gradient orbs representing AI. It flags these patterns during generation and avoids them. The output looks hand-crafted rather than machine-suggested, which matters when you’re presenting to clients or stakeholders.

Output-format playbooks. Instead of a single “generate HTML” instruction, Claude Design has specialized playbooks for different formats — design canvases, slide decks, interactive prototypes, timeline animations, wireframes. Each playbook includes structural skeletons, layout patterns, and known gotchas for that format. A slide deck gets page-turn navigation and speaker notes. A prototype gets clickable states. A wireframe gets annotation layers.

When It Triggers

Claude Design activates when your prompt includes design-related keywords — “deck”, “prototype”, “landing page”, “animation”, “poster”, “wireframe”, “brand”, “mockup” — combined with a request to generate HTML. It also kicks in for less obvious triggers like “make this look professional” or “design me something for [product name]”.
