Choose Agent Browser if your agent lives in a terminal and you want zero Python setup. Choose Browser Use if you’re building Python agents and want the richest community ecosystem. Choose Playwright MCP if you’re already in an MCP client and value deterministic, accessibility-tree-based control.

The three tools attack the same problem — letting an AI agent operate a real browser — from three different angles. Agent Browser is a Rust CLI built by Vercel Labs that speaks Chrome DevTools Protocol directly. Browser Use is a Python library (100k+ GitHub stars) that wraps browser control around LLM-driven decision-making. Playwright MCP is Microsoft’s official Model Context Protocol server, exposing Playwright’s battle-tested automation as MCP tools.

I tested all three on the same four tasks: logging into a site, extracting a pricing table, filling a multi-step form, and monitoring a page for changes. The differences were not in whether they could do the job — all three handled every task — but in setup time, token cost, and how much control you get over the automation.

What Each Tool Actually Is#

Agent Browser — the Rust CLI for terminal agents#

Agent Browser is Vercel Labs’ open-source browser control CLI. It’s written in Rust and communicates with Chrome via the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP). Your AI agent — Claude Code, Codex, or any CLI-based assistant — drives it through terminal commands: open a page, click an element, extract text, take a screenshot.

Its defining trait is that it’s built for agents, not for scripted automation. The agent reads a page snapshot and decides what to click next, so there are no pre-written selectors. Installation is a single command (npm install -g agent-browser), and it downloads Chrome for Testing on first run. No Python environment, no virtualenv, no dependency tree.

The tradeoff: because it’s snapshot-driven, complex multi-step flows can burn tokens on re-reading page state, and its API surface is smaller than the other two. It shines in quick, interactive browser sessions from the terminal — exactly the “let the agent check this page” workflow.

Browser Use — the Python library with the biggest ecosystem#

Browser Use is the most popular AI browser automation library on GitHub — the repo passes 100k stars — and it targets Python developers building agents with LangChain, LlamaIndex, or raw LLM calls. It connects your LLM to a real browser session (Playwright under the hood) and lets the model decide actions from page state, including DOM and accessibility-tree views.

The strength is depth. Browser Use ships with agent loops, memory, custom tool extensions, and a cloud API for running browser sessions at scale. If you’re building a production agent that scrapes, fills forms, and makes decisions all day, Browser Use gives you the most building blocks out of the box.

The cost is complexity. You manage a Python environment, install the library plus Playwright browsers, and handle the agent loop yourself or through its abstractions. For a one-off “have my agent check a page” task, it’s heavier than Agent Browser. For a serious agent product, it’s the most capable starting point.

Playwright MCP — deterministic control for MCP clients#

Playwright MCP is Microsoft’s official MCP server for browser automation. It exposes Playwright’s functionality as MCP tools: navigate, click, fill, extract, screenshot, and more. Its key architectural choice is using “structured accessibility snapshots” instead of screenshots — the server “enables LLMs to interact with web pages through structured accessibility snapshots, bypassing the need for screenshots or visually-tuned models.”

That makes it fast and deterministic. Because it operates on the accessibility tree rather than pixels, it needs no vision model, and tool application is unambiguous — no guessing where a button is from an image. It runs on Node.js 18+, and Microsoft explicitly recommends the CLI+SKILLS variant for high-throughput coding agents because CLI invocations are more token-efficient than loading MCP tool schemas.

Playwright MCP is the right choice when you’re already in an MCP ecosystem — VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Desktop, Goose — and want browser control to appear as just another set of tools in the agent’s toolbox.

How to Choose#

Pick Agent Browser when your assistant is a CLI agent and the task is interactive — “open this URL, tell me what the pricing page says,” “check whether this dashboard is up.” It’s also the gentlest onboarding: if you have Node.js, you’re minutes from a working browser agent. Pick Browser Use when you’re writing Python and building something that runs unattended — a scraping pipeline, a monitoring bot, an agent that makes purchases or submits forms on a schedule. One more angle: if the task is deterministic and repetitive — the same page scraped the same way every day — none of these are the best tool. A plain Playwright E2E script is cheaper, faster, and more reliable than any LLM-driven browser loop. The AI browser tools earn their keep on tasks where the path isn’t known in advance.
