I Let an AI Note-Taking Agent Run My Notes for a Month — Here’s What Survived

I am a compulsive note-taker. Meeting notes, book highlights, half-formed article ideas, grocery lists, debugging logs — if it passed through my brain, it got captured somewhere. The problem was never capture. The problem was that after six years of switching between apps, my notes lived in four places, most of them unsearchable, and my “system” was a folder called misc with 400 files in it. So when AI note-taking agents started promising to organize everything automatically, I decided to test it properly: for one month, every note I took went through an AI agent instead of my usual apps. Here’s what actually happened.

Why I Decided to Try It#

The pitch for AI note-taking agents is seductive: you keep capturing the way you always have, and the agent handles the part humans are bad at — organizing, connecting, and resurfacing. No more deciding which folder a note belongs in. No more tagging. The agent reads everything, builds a knowledge graph, and answers questions about your own notes like “what did I decide about the pricing page last Tuesday?”

I had two concrete motivations. First, my capture workflow was already chaotic enough that any automatic organization would beat manual folders. Second, I’d been burned by search-based retrieval: I knew a note existed, but couldn’t find it because I’d filed it under the wrong app or wrong title. An agent that understands content rather than filenames seemed like the obvious fix.

The setup took about twenty minutes. I picked an agent that runs locally against a notes directory, installed it into my terminal workflow, and pointed it at a folder with about two years of Markdown notes. Every new note went into an inbox file; the agent was responsible for tagging, linking, and summarizing. I committed to the experiment: no manual folders, no manual tags, no exceptions for a month.

The Three Things I Learned#

Learning 1: Automatic Organization Is Great Until It Isn’t#

For the first two weeks, the agent’s auto-tagging felt like magic. Meeting notes got linked to the projects they belonged to. A random thought about “queue backpressure” from three weeks ago surfaced automatically when I started writing about async systems. The knowledge graph actually worked — I found notes I’d forgotten I had, and the agent’s weekly summary gave me a “what did I actually do” review for free.

Then it broke. Not dramatically — it just started making confident organizational mistakes. It tagged a personal note about a family trip under “Work Projects” because the note mentioned a colleague’s name. It merged two unrelated notes about “React” — one about the framework, one about a chemical engineering project — into a single cluster because the word matched. The errors weren’t frequent, maybe one in twenty notes, but they were silent. A manual folder system can’t misorganize a note; it just puts it somewhere you can find by browsing. An AI system can bury a note under wrong tags where you’ll never look.

Learning 2: Retrieval Got Better, Capture Got Worse#

The agent was dramatically better at answering questions about my notes: “what were the three options I listed for the database migration?” returned a sourced answer in seconds, pulling from notes I’d written months apart. That alone made the experiment worthwhile — my old search rarely found anything unless I remembered the exact title.

But here’s the tradeoff I didn’t expect: knowing the agent would organize things made me capture lazier. I stopped writing context in notes. Why explain what “the API issue” was when the agent would “remember”? It didn’t — an AI agent’s memory is only as good as the text it’s given, and my notes got shorter and more cryptic as the month went on. The organization improved while the raw material degraded. By week three I was writing notes like they were prompts for a future self who already knew everything.

Learning 3: The Resurfacing Feature Is the Real Value#

The single most useful feature wasn’t organization or search — it was resurfacing. The agent periodically surfaced notes related to what I was currently working on: a decision I’d made in a meeting two months ago that contradicted what I was about to do, a book highlight that connected to a problem I was solving that day. This is the one thing no manual system does well. Folders and tags only help you find things you’re looking for; resurfacing brings you things you didn’t know you needed.

That feature is also why I kept any AI note-taking at all after the experiment. The knowledge graph and auto-tags were nice-to-haves with occasional errors. Resurfacing was a genuine superpower I couldn’t replicate manually.

The honest conclusion after a month: a pure AI note-taking workflow is excellent at retrieval and resurfacing and mediocre at organization. The agent’s semantic search found things my folder system never could, and resurfacing genuinely changed how I work. But trusting it to organize everything meant accepting silent misclassification, and the lazy-capture problem eroded the very material the agent was supposed to work with.

The winning pattern turned out to be hybrid, and it’s what I’ve kept: the agent handles capture, tagging, search, and resurfacing — and I do a five-minute weekly review where I skim the agent’s new tags and fix anything obviously wrong. That’s the entire manual overhead, and it eliminates both failure modes. The lazy-capture issue I fixed with one rule: every note must contain enough context that a stranger could understand it in six months. The agent enforces nothing; that rule is on me.

What I’d Do Differently Next Time#

Three things would have made the month better:

Set the context rule on day one. My notes degraded because I assumed the agent would fill in the gaps. Adding a rule — “write notes as if a colleague will read them next quarter” — would have kept the raw material high while the agent handled organization.

Spot-check tags weekly, not never. Twenty minutes of review per week caught the misclassifications before they compounded. The silent errors are only dangerous if you never look.

Use resurfacing as the primary interface. The most valuable habit wasn’t searching my notes — it was reading the agent’s daily “notes related to today’s work” digest. That’s the feature I’d design any future system around.

Should You Try It?#

If your notes are a mess you never search, an AI note-taking agent will help — the retrieval improvement alone is worth it, and resurfacing is a genuine superpower. The switch is safe if you adopt two habits: keep writing context-rich notes, and spend five minutes a week reviewing what the agent filed. Skip it if you have a manual system that already works and you browse your notes by folder — you’ll be paying for organization you don’t need and adding a trust layer you didn’t ask for.
