Best AI Agent Frameworks in 2026: A Data-Backed Roundup
Picking an AI agent framework in 2026 feels like betting on a standard that hasn’t been decided yet. Every vendor publishes a benchmark where they win, and the READMEs all promise the same three things: build agents, ship fast, scale later. I pulled live GitHub data for twelve frameworks on August 15, 2026 — stars, last push, open issues — to see which ones are actually being maintained, not just marketed. Here’s the roundup.
The Platform Tier: LangChain, LangGraph, Semantic Kernel#
If you need deployment infrastructure and a mature ecosystem, LangChain’s platform play and Semantic Kernel’s Azure story are the safe bets — you pay in learning curve.
LangChain remains the most-starred framework in the category at 144,265 stars, and the repo had a push the same day I checked. It’s rebranded itself as “the agent engineering platform”: LangChain for the orchestration abstractions, LangGraph (39,738 stars) for stateful, human-in-the-loop workflows, and the LangGraph Platform for deployment. The trade-off is real — you’re adopting a big vocabulary (runnables, checkpoints, graph state) before you write your first agent.
Semantic Kernel takes the opposite route to the same destination. Microsoft’s 28,451-star framework ships in C#, Python, and Java, and it’s built to drop into Azure infrastructure. If your company already lives in the Microsoft stack, this is the lowest-friction path to production agents. Outside that world, the abstraction layer feels heavy for what you get.
The Orchestration Tier: CrewAI and the AutoGen Split#
CrewAI owns the role-based multi-agent space, while AutoGen’s original repo went quiet in April 2026 — the AG2 fork is the one still shipping.
CrewAI (57,107 stars, created October 2023) made its name on role-playing crews: a researcher agent, a writer agent, a reviewer agent, coordinated toward one task. Recent versions added Flows for deterministic, event-driven control when you don’t want agents freelancing. It’s the framework most tutorials mean when they show “three agents collaborating.”
AutoGen is where this roundup gets uncomfortable. The microsoft/autogen repo still shows 60,434 stars and 9,109 forks, but the GitHub API says its last push was April 15, 2026 — four months of silence with 991 open issues. I checked the date twice. The community continuation, AG2, describes itself as “AG2 (formerly AutoGen)” and pushed the day I looked. If someone tells you in 2026 that they’re “building with AutoGen,” they’re almost certainly building with AG2. Plan accordingly.
Vendor-Native and Minimal: OpenAI Agents SDK, Claude Agent SDK, Google ADK, Pydantic AI, smolagents, Mastra#
Match the framework to your model provider, or go minimal with Pydantic AI and smolagents — the TypeScript crowd gets Mastra.
The vendor-native tier is the 2025-2026 wave. OpenAI’s Agents SDK (28,654 stars, created March 2025) runs the most disciplined triage of the bunch — 24 open issues at 28K stars reads like a backlog under control, not a backlog out of it. It stays close to the OpenAI API, which is exactly its point. Anthropic’s Claude Agent SDK is the youngest here (7,897 stars, June 2025) with the roughest edges — 434 open issues — but it pairs directly with Claude Code and the Agent SDK ecosystem. Google’s ADK (21,123 stars) takes a code-first, Gemini-native approach and bundles evaluation and deployment, which almost nobody else does out of the box.
The minimal tier earns its place. Pydantic AI (19,314 stars) is “how Python does AI” — typed end to end, every model, pushed the day I checked. smolagents (28,814 stars) makes agents think in code rather than JSON tool calls, which is a genuinely different design bet; the repo has been quiet since late July, but it remains the best teaching framework on the list. And for TypeScript teams, Mastra (27,213 stars) is the only serious first-class option — a modern TS framework with agents, workflows, and a managed cloud.

Which Framework Should You Use?#
The honest answer: pick by your stack and your tolerance for vendor lock-in.
Python solo developers should start with Pydantic AI or smolagents — both are small enough to read the source, and both let you reach LangChain’s ecosystem later if you need it. TypeScript teams have one real choice: Mastra. Enterprise Microsoft shops take Semantic Kernel and never look back. GPT-centric product teams get the OpenAI Agents SDK; if you’re already living inside Claude Code, the Claude Agent SDK is the natural fit. Multi-agent role-play is CrewAI’s territory. And if you want deployment infrastructure with vendor-neutral orchestration, LangChain + LangGraph remains the default for a reason.
Two signals from the data are worth more than any star count. First, the AutoGen situation: the name still carries 60K stars, but the project moved — build on AG2 or don’t build on AutoGen at all. Second, open-issue hygiene: the OpenAI SDK’s 24-issue backlog at 28K stars tells you the maintainers are on top of it, and that correlates with a better contributor experience than the 700-900 issue backlogs most frameworks carry.
